Often the original charts have long since been lost, and all that exists
are copies of copies that have been handed down. I have sung in several
groups with long traditions, where poor Xerox copies were all that remained
of the original arrangements. Here’s a perfect example of what I
am talking about, a few measures from a stunning arrangement of, “I’ll
Take Romance”:

would say 90 percent or more is decipherable, but it’s really a
wreck. This arrangement will not be sung into the next decade because
it will not sustain the next round or two of copying. But with modern
